Egbuniwe Chinedum 1 Chemistry Lab report # 8 Summary – Part A This labs purpose was to determine the derivation of Hess’s law. To begin the lab we were to obtain 2 Styrofoam cups and create a calorimeter by placing them inside one another. After creating it we were to measure the calorimeters weight and place it inside of a 250mL beaker, and then added 40mL of distilled water to it. Then we would open the file for information recording on the computer and fill a 125mL flask with 50mL of Distilled Water. We boiled the water up to about 80 °C while recording the room temperature water for about 3 minutes. After this time mark we placed the hot water into the room temperature water and stirred. We let the water sit for about 6-8 minutes after mixture. Then we weighed the calorimeter with the water inside of it. Part B We recorded the calorimeters weight again and then placed 50mL of 1.0 M HCl to it, we then re-weighed it. We then took an 8-10 in. strip of Mg ribbon and cleaned it by sanding it.
