Chapter 5 28/05/2009 12:09:00 Descriptive Research  Review 4: 4 basic types of research  o Descriptive research:      Focused on describing characteristics of given  group in a systematic fashion  Examples: presidential approval ratings. Number of hours of TV  watched each day, schizophrenia diagnosis, etc.  o Some (familiar) terminology: Population      – groups you want to generalize to Sample      – Subset of the population in your study  Advantages o Provides a broad, rich picture of phenomena o Provides background information for other research Disadvantages o Sampling biases o Biases interpretations o Difficult to test hypotheses
