I. Results and Discussion: The compounds were purified using extraction and then their purity was checked using refractive index for liquids and melting point for solids. Results Part A : Trial 1: 4.75 g of dodecane recovered. % Recovery: 4.75 g/5.02 g=.946=94.6% recovered Refractive Index: n 20/D=1.416 (Wikipedia=1.4216) Trial 2 1 : original mass=5.01g, Yield=4.68g extracted. % recovery: 4.68/5.01=93.4% recovered Refractive index=1.418 Part B : With one washing of 10 mL: After extraction, bottom layer purple, top layer clear. 10.92 g recovered. With 2 washings of 5 mL 2 : extracted final amount of 11.8grams Part C : Trial 1: .05 g of purple solid recovered % recovered: .05/.065=76.9% melting pt.=111.4-113.9 ºC(lit. 116 ºC) Trial 2: extracted 0.10grams of yellow solid % recovered: .1/.1=100% MP range 83.7 - 88.9 degrees Celsius Discussion In part A, about the same amount of dodecane was recovered in both trials. The refractive index was slightly higher in trial 2. Looking at the average results from all labs, it seems that both methods

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
