I. Results and Discussion: The compounds were purified using extraction and then their purity was checked using refractive index for liquids and melting point for solids. Results Part A : Trial 1: 4.75 g of dodecane recovered. % Recovery: 4.75 g/5.02 g=.946=94.6% recovered Refractive Index: n 20/D=1.416 (Wikipedia=1.4216) Trial 2 1 : original mass=5.01g, Yield=4.68g extracted. % recovery: 4.68/5.01=93.4% recovered Refractive index=1.418 Part B : With one washing of 10 mL: After extraction, bottom layer purple, top layer clear. 10.92 g recovered. With 2 washings of 5 mL 2 : extracted final amount of 11.8grams Part C : Trial 1: .05 g of purple solid recovered % recovered: .05/.065=76.9% melting pt.=111.4-113.9 ºC(lit. 116 ºC) Trial 2: extracted 0.10grams of yellow solid % recovered: .1/.1=100% MP range 83.7 - 88.9 degrees Celsius Discussion In part A, about the same amount of dodecane was recovered in both trials.
