1 Lecture 32 Midterm Review, Unit 3 Iclicker Update: Important Information! * Iclicker Grading Scheme : Iclicker Actual %: % of Total Points: 75 and above 100 70 90 65 80 60 70 55 60 50 50 45 40 40. .. 30. .. * One person with multiple Iclickers : The Iclickers will be confiscated, all involved will receive a 0 as a final score for the entire semester's worth of IClicker Points, and the Office of Student Conduct will investigate. See written course policies on bspace and discussions in lecture on webcasts. * One person answering in multiple lectures : Due to conflicting information, we offer the following resolution. After 11/9/07: Do NOT vote in more than one lecture. To do so will result in a zero for that day's points and referral to the Office of Student Conduct. It is fine to come to multiple lectures but DO *NOT* USE YOUR ICLICKER IN MORE THAN ONE. The Big Picture (#1) * Predict the direction of chemical reactions and phase changes. * Predict how much useful work we can get out of a system. Based on the laws of thermodynamics , we can: • Heat capacity (c): q = c x m x T • Change in enthalpy ( H): 9 melting and vaporization ( H fusion , H vaporization ) 9 chemical reactions 9 exothermic ( H<0), endothermic ( H>0) 9 at standard state ( H o ) 9 Hess’ Law (e.g., H rxn = H 1 + H 2 + H 3 ) 9 enthalpies of formation ( H o f ) 9 bond dissociation enthalpies (e.g., H for H 2 H+H) • Change in entropy ( S): 9 melting and vaporization ( S fusion , S vaporization ) 9 chemical reactions 9 at standard state ( S o ) 9 standard molar entropies (S o ) The Big Picture
