Perlmutter was trained as an engineer and psychologist. He spent eight years at M.I.T’s Center of International Studies and five years at IMEDE in Lausanne, Switzerland. His main interests are in theory and practice of institution building, particularly the international corporation. He has recently been appointed Director for Research and Development of Worldwide Institutions in association with Management Science Center at the University of Pennsylvania as well member of the faculty at the Wharton School. Author in this reading starts with comparison four different organizations around the world, which leads to rise a question what a multinational company is? Some companies will think that they are multinational because their products are marketed in many different countries, have manufacturing located around the world, or even because they have executives who are non-American. But what is the big deal with a company being multinational? This is because many companies regard being multinational runs business with prestige and respect. Executives of firms have different criteria in which they rate if their firm is multinational or not.
