CEIE 340 Lab 1 Solutions Fall 2006 YHK Page 2 of 3 Problem 2 To answer this question, grid paper was superimposed over the watershed area. The number of squares inside the watershed was estimated. Using the scale on the map, the actual area, in ft 2 , represented by each square was estimated. Then the number of squares was multiplied by the area in ft 2 of each square to get an estimate of the total area of the watershed. The area was estimated to be approximately: 7.076 x 10 6 ft 2 , or 162.45 acres, or 0.254 mi 2 . It is also possible to estimate the area using a planimeter or software, such as AutoCAD©. To estimate the error, consider redrawing the boundary but attempt to include as much area as is reasonable given the 20 ft contours.
