Chapter 13 Questionnaire 1) What are PDAs and how are they helpful for estimating? * Personal Digital Assistant (PDA): * Estimating programs can be used on a PDA, which equips estimators with all of the tools needed to perform detailed takeoffs remotely. 2) What is estimating? * Estimating is the process of looking into the future and trying to predict project costs and resource re- quirements. 3) What is a conceptual estimate? * When design details are unavailable a conceptual estimate can be computed by using a table of square foot and cubic foot building costs as given in Building Construction Cost Data. * Used only for project control purposes. 4) What is a preliminary design estimate? * Usually done when 40% of the total design is complete. * Prepared by the architect or architect/engineer to reflect expected costs based on more definitive data.\ * Offers the owner a pause to review construction before detail design commences. 5) What are engineer’s estimate/final estimate/owner’s estimate? * Calculation of the total job cost minus markup. * Done once the plans and specifications have been given to the contractor for bidding purposes. * Should achieve an accuracy of +/- 3% since total design is now available. 2)
