SOC100-02 Prof. Deidre Hill Butler Winter 2006 Name_________________________________________ Quiet Rage: The Stanford Prison Experiment -- Film Viewing Worksheet This film of a famous psychology research experiment provides data for our consideration how groups influence deviance and individual behavior. As you watch, consider the following questions & jot notes in your notebook, complete the sheet for Monday 2/6.This worksheet is graded as part of your participation course grade. 1. What police procedures were used during the ‘arrests’ and how did these contribute to making the ‘prisoners’ feel confused, fearful, dehumanized – to begin to redefine their identity from student to prisoner? Real police personal driving real police vehicle, were dispatched at the student’s house of residence. The police informed the students that they had committed a crime of some sort, and were then pulled out into the street. The students were subjected to a public body search, and were placed into cop cars viewable to neighbors and onlookers. The students were brought to the station, to have their picture, and fingerprints taken. Making the students feel like a criminal was easy, because all the police had to do was treat the students like a criminal. They were forced to wear degrading uniforms, at times they were blindfolded, and they had to wear a small chain around one leg to remind them of there dehumanized state. 2.
