Lecture 4 17:26 Latency 6-12 Sexual impulses lay dormant Genital stage 12 + Mature sexuality emerges Drives are working and loving o Drive to create something with a career o Drive to create a family Anxiety 1895 o Anxiety developed as a result of repression of id impulses o Ego and superego throw conflict into the unconscious o Anxiety indicates that the job is done (conflict is repressed) 1926 o Anxiety did not indicate that the job was finished, but indicated that a job  needed to be done o Job that needs to be done is that the id impulses were threatening to break  through into consciousness o Anxiety has useful as a signal to the need to contain the conflict in the  unconscious by further repression Second theory is much more adaptive and attributes much more helpful role  to anxiety (warning signal) o Signal anxiety – anxiety signaling need for addition repression of conflict Prototypic anxiety – anxiety the infant experiences at birth when it is suddenly  flooded with excitation over which he has no control o Anxious experience that could arise later in life
