CE-320 Microcomputers I Fall B 2009 Lecture 4 Page 2 Addressing Modes In a previous lecture, we mentioned that the operand of an instruction can use different methods for specifying the data to the microprocessor, which we called addressing modes. Today, we’ll look at several addressing modes that will make our programs, shorter, faster, and easier to read. Extended Direct Inherent Immediate Indexed There is one more type of addressing mode that we will use in Microcomputers I, Relative, that we will cover in the next lecture. The Star12 has additional modes that we won’t cover until the end of the course. Effective Address versus Data The effective address is address in the microcomputer’s memory that holds the data to be used by the operation. The operand is often used to construct the effective address, and the addressing mode tells the processor what function to perform on the operand to calculate the effective address.
