Alyssa Singh Discussion: Lab #3: Extraction and Drying Agents: Extraction of Caffeine from Tea The goals of this experiment were to effectively extract caffeine from tea with purification and separation techniques such as, extraction, filtration, drying, and evaporation. Caffeine was successfully extracted and results verified the accomplishment of the experimental goals. This experiment started with obtaining and boiling 3.502 grams of tea leaved, 2.401 grams of calcium carbonate, and water. During the cooling of the tea leaves to 55˘C, calcium carbonate, and water mixture, the tea leaves formed a bottom layer while the brown calcium carbonate/water mixture formed a layer at the top. This validated the concept that compounds with a greater density than water move to the bottom of the beaker. Therefore, the tea leaves are an organic compound because it sank below the solvent, water. The drying of the solvents generated a snow globe, which was expected because the drying agents absorb water particles. After the various mixtures
