Samantha Nash Anthropology 101 Professor Valdes Primate Article Review Should animals be able to have the same emotions as humans? If an animal was capable of feeling the same things that humans do, we would have a better understanding of animal life. Frans de Waal explores the distinction between animal and human emotions. He believes that if animals aren’t able to convey the same emotions as humans then we will not truly be able to understand the similarities between man and animal. Waal believes that animals are more like humans than others. It is unheard of in the scientific world to interpret animals having human emotions. I believe that animals should be able to portray human emotions. It would give us a better understanding of what goes on in the animal kingdom outside of our own. Waal said, “In the end we must ask: What kind of risk are we willing to take—the risk of underestimating animal mental life or the risk of overestimating it?” (Waal, Discover).
