The genetics of wizardry If magical ability is the product of two genes rather than just one, then both Squibs and Muggleborns can be accounted for by an extension of Mendelian laws . Each gene has two forms, or alleles : to be magical, a person must have at least one copy of each of the two magical alleles a non-magical person may have two non-magical a alleles, two non-magical b alleles, or both ( aabb ) A - magical allele 1 ( dominant ) a - non-magical allele ( recessive ) B - magical allele 2 ( dominant ) b - non-magical allele ( recessive )
