Control sequences lie outside of the transcribed region The coding regions of many eukaryotic genes are interrupted by non coding introns The dystrophin gene The dystrophin gene is ~2.6 million bases long . • about 0.01% of the human genome: the largest gene known • 97 exons code for a ~3600 amino acid protein • only about 0.004% of the gene is exons • Duchenne MD patients have deletions in this gene and lack a functional dystrophin protein Introns are removed to make mature mRNA from the interrupted gene The total transcribed segment defines the region of a gene Introns : DNA sequences within a gene that are transcribed but do not appear in the final mRNA product.
