Review Session for 1-14-07 1. Basics of DNA Structure -Watson-Crick Bases , how many hydrogen bonds do each pair have & what structural effect does the difference have? -What interactions/structural features makes DNA so stable ? Which is most important? *Hydrophobic Inside (core similar to protein structures) & Hydrophilic outside (to interact with the water/solution) *Electrostatic interactions F=kq 1 q 2 /Dr 2 , force is inversely proportional to dielectric constant & radii, proportional to the magnitude of the two charges *van der Waals, do you understand the concept of the van der Waals radii? (plot on page 8, figure 1.10) *Hydrogen Bonding, distance is shorter than the vdW radii, which atoms are usually involved in biological molecules, be able to ID donors & acceptors if given an H-bonding pair -2 nd Law of Thermodynamics : Entropy always increases somewhere * Know and understand the Gibb’s Free Energy Equation: G= Hsys -T Ssys (< 0, for any spontaneous reaction)
