Marvell-may have been gay, born in 1621, works released in folio 3 yrs after death by woman claiming to be his wife. 1625 to 1649 Parliament and monarch king Charles I, who was tried and killed. (Parliament vs. Royalists) Marvell sat out most of war. In europe btwn 1642-1647. Not there while fighting taking place- during this time you HAD to take a side during Civil War but maybe he left on purpose so as not to have to. He returned and sort of took Parliament's side. The pastoral is ostensibly utterly apolitical. But w/ political bedrock, writing in the pastoral sense is so removed from pol. Issues that in itself it's a political stance. James VI Scotland and I of England 1500s. Determined to bring unity. Oct 23 1642 King Charles I saw hundreds of thousands of lives lost between countries. 24 year old Charles became king. No one expected war btwn Parliament and monarchy. His father James was much louder. But Charles believed he was a little god on earth. Like the father of the nation, he expected to be strictly obeyed. Henry was his older brother. When he died, Charles was a boy. He tried to fill his brother's
