BIO LECTURE NOTES (1/28/09) Protists Horizontal gene transfer o Common in bacterial world where pieces of DNA can be transferred between phylogenetically different bacteria Role in evolution of antibiotic resistance Origins of mitochondrion o Mitochondria are organelles that generate ATP o The endosymbiosis theory proposes that mitochondria originated when a bacterial cell took up residence inside a eukaryote about 2 billion years ago o Symbiosis occurs when individuals of two different species live in physical contact o Endosymbiosis occurs when an organism of one species lives inside an organism of another species Initial steps in evolution of mitochondrion 1) eukaryotic cell surrounds and engulfs bacterium 2) bacterium lives within eukaryotic cell 3) eukaryote supplies bacterium with protection and carbon compounds. Bacterium supplies eukaryote with ATP the mitochondrion o observing consistent with the endosymbiosis theory include the following: 1) mitochondria have their own ribosomes to manufacture their own proteins 2) mitochondria have double membranes, consistent with engulfing
