BIO LECTURE NOTES (2/2/09) Plants are a source of fuel o Plant-based fuels such as wood and coal Humans have relied on plant-based fuels o 1) dead plant material accumulates in marshy or boggy habitats o 2) if oxygen in water is scarce, the organic matter decays only partially, forming peat o 3) if the peat deposits are later covered by sediments and compressed, the resulting pressure and heat change them into coal plants are a key source of medicines How do biologists study green plants? o 1) they compare the fundamental morphological features of various green algae and green plants o 2) they analyzing the fossil record of the lineage o 3) they assess similarities and differences in DNA sequences from homologous genes to estimate phylogenetic trees morphology relates land plants to green algae o both have chlorophyll a and b o both have B-carotene o both have thylakoids (membrane bound sacs) o cell walls are similar in composition analyzing land plant morphological traits
