Neurons are what make up the nervous system. Neurons receive chemical messages through dendrites. Neurons speak a language understood by cells. This language is electrochemical impulses. These electrochemical impulses have to be charged before the neuron is triggered to release the chemical messages. Neurons rest when not sending messages. The inside of a cell contains more negative ions than on the outside. In a neuron’s resting state, its dendrites are still receiving. Since the neurons do not touch each other, the messages cross at the synapse cleft. Neurons are located on each side of the synapse cleft. There is the presynaptic neuron which sends messages and the postsynaptic neuron which receives the messages. In the Presynaptic terminal button are sacs called the synaptic vesicles. These vesicles are filled with neurotransmitters that are chemical messages to other neurons. When a neural impulse reaches the terminal button, these chemical messages are released. On the receiving side of the synaptic cleft, molecules join with receptor sites. The receptor site only reads
