Reading 15 1. Summarize the comments by Franklin quoted by Weber. What role does duty play in Franklin’s view, according to Weber? - Time is money; credit is money; money generates more money; a punctual payer increases his chances of borrowing more money; a working man is more likely to be extended grace by the creditor than someone who sits idle; use time wisely. We have a duty to gain money as an end. People are working because it’s their duty and not to get rich. 2. What does Weber say concerning America’s northern and southern colonies? What is his point? - The southern colonies were underdeveloped in capitalism but the “capitalist spirit” was still evident; these colonies were originally founded by capitalist for business purposes. Northern colonies were developed for religious purposes. He says this to prove that the “spirit of capitalism” is not a causal effect. 3. To whom is Weber referring when he speaks of “theoreticians of the superstructure?” Why are things more complex than those theorists typically recognize? -
