Ch 52: Population Ecology 1. Life tables summarize how likely it is indivs will survive n reproduce. The “growth rate” can be calculated from life-table data or from “direct observartion.” 2. Researchers observe wide variety of patterns when they track changes in popu size over time, ranging from no growth, to regular cycles, to continued growth indep of popu size. 3. Populations grow due to births—any form of reproduction—and immigration. Populations decline due to deaths and “emigration.” Demography depends on 4 factors: births, deaths, immigration, emigration. 4. The lizard Lacerta vivipara give live birth. They monitored these lizards in diff environments every day, and revealed “survivorship” which is the proportion of offspring produced that survive to a particular age. 5. They graph the logarithm of “number of survivors vs. age” which is called “survivorship curve.” Type I curve: survivorship thru life is high, & most approach max life span. “Type II curve” most experience CONSTANT survivorship (songbirds). “Type III curves

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
