1. Postwar America- 15 million American soldiers returning had trouble finding jobs, feared the end of the war may result in return of hard economic times, war years had increased standards of living, savings, consumer demands helped boom auto industry 2. Servicemen's Readjustment Act (GI Bill)- proved support for 15 million troops, half seized opportunity to continue education at government expense, 2 million attended college, sparked postwar boom in higher education, $16 billion in low-interest, government-backed loans to buy houses 3. Baby Boom- explosion in marriages and births, 50 million babies entering the US population from younger marriages, profoundly affect nation's social institutions in later half of 20th century, trend of more women in workforce continued 4. Suburban Growth- prefabricated houses, Levittowns, low interest rates on mortgages that were government- insured, tax deductible, majority became suburbanites, increasingly poor and racially divided inner cities 5. Levittown- a project of 17,000 mass-produced, low-price family homes on Long Island, NY, resulted in a construction boom, William J. 6. Rise of Sunbelt- warmer climate, lower taxes, economic opportunities in defense-related industries attracted many to states from Florida to California, transferred tax dollars to South and West, military spending helped shift people 7. Employment Act of 1946- created Council of Economic Advisers, much watered down bill, was intended to include national health insurance, increase in minimum wage, US government commitment to full employment 8. Council of Economic Advisers- to counsel both the president and Congress on means of promoting national economic warfare 9. Inflation- Truman asked Congress to continue price controls, OPA relaxed the controls instead, prices rose 25% in first year 10. Strikes- workers wanted wages to keep up with prices, 4.5 million went on strike, railroads and mine workers threatened national safety, Truman took tough approach by seizing mines and using troops to keep them operated 11. Committee on Civil Rights- Truman bypassed the southern Democrats in key seats in Congress and established this committee to challenge racial discrimination in 1946. 12. Civil Rights- Truman was first modern president to use powers of office to challenge racial discrimination, Committee on Civil Rights, strengthened Civil Rights division of Justice Department, ordered end of racial discrimination in federal government and armed forces, tried to pass Fair Employment Practices Act, Democrats blocked it 13. 22nd Amendment- two-term limit, in reaction to Roosevelt's four times elected 14. Taft-Hartley Act- 1947 Congress passed "slave-labor" bill, vetoed it, overridden, outlawed the closed shop, "right to work" laws outlawing the union shop, outlawing secondary boycotts, giving president power to invoke cooling- off period before strike could be called 15. Closed Shop- contract requiring workers to join a union before being hired 16. Union Shop- contract requiring workers to join a union after being hired 17. Secondary Boycott-
