Intro Bio I (BIO 311C), Fall 2009, Dr. Bushart Homework #6 1. Defects in intermediate filaments lead to blistering disorders because the cells in the layers of skin are easily separated. What other components might have also result in blistering disorders if they were defective? Explain. Cells are connected to their ECM. The cytoskeleton and ECM components are linked via transmembrane proteins, so just as alterations in cytoskeletal proteins (keratin filaments specifically) have the blistering outcome, their linkages (desmosomes) and ECM components they attach to (collagen or fibronectin) might lead to blistering too. 2. The major adhesive protein of desmosomes is cadherin. Why would it be likely that the cells from the same tissue are held together through desmosomes? Cadherins are selective adhesion proteins, they can be specific not only from species to species, but also different between cell types. Since tissues are composed of the same type of cells it would make sense that they would be held together through cadherins, and by extension through desmosomes. 3.
