Jocelyn Supanich Mr. Feeley Contemporary Literature 12 December 2019 The Reality of Misery Plot Review: In Stephen King’s Misery , the reader met one of the two main characters, Paul Sheldon, right away. He was a bestselling novelist who had been in a car crash and had severely injured his legs. When he woke up, the woman who seemed to have saved him greeted him with the following statement: “’My name is Annie Wilkes. And I am-’ ‘I know,’ he said. ‘You’re my number one fan.’ ‘Yes,’ she said smiling. ‘That’s just what I am’” (King 6). or so she claimed, Annie Wilkes. The rising action builds up for almost the entire book. Starting early on when Annie tells Paul that she adores his Misery series and she demands that he burns his only copy of his latest book, and that he write the next book in the series just the way she wants it to be written. This hunger of a better ending in the series drives Annie’s actions throughout the story. Annie offers Paul a typewriter so that he can begin writing the new and improved book, but she doesn’t have the right paper for Paul to write on. Paul had realized at this point, that Annie wasn’t really trying to nurse him back to health, she was holding him captive and was going to do whatever it takes for him to write this book. Annie decided to head out for the store and Paul planned to take advantage of the time he had and to do some investigating around the house. Up until this
point, Paul had been locked in his room. Right before Annie walked out the door though, she charged at Paul and slammed down on his knee, further injuring it. She claimed it was only punishment for making her go get new paper. While Annie was gone, Paul made it around the house. He found the painkillers in the bathroom that Annie has gotten him addicted to and stashed away a few extra doses for when she refuses to give him his medication. He can’t check upstairs, due to the fact that he has broken legs and is in a wheelchair, so he checks out the main level. Paul hears Annie pulling in the driveway and rushes back to his room, trying not to leave anything that would blow his cover. When she returns, she seems suspicious but doesn’t
