Matt Idleman Economics 201 8/27/08 Paper: Cumberland Times-News Date: August 24, 2008 Article Name: “Gasoline service bell rings for last time at Bel Air Exxon” The ding ding that’s sounded for nearly 40 years as an alert that a customer is in need of a fill-up at the Bel Air Exxon Service Service Station is silent. The McMullen Highway business that’s been open under the leadership of David Knoche since April 1, 1970, no longer will sell gas. Instead, it began operating tentatively under the name Bel Air Kar Kare on Tuesday. To honor his loyal customers, he sold gasoline for 35 cents a gallon Monday, the same price he sold it when he opened. The Maryland Department of the Environment conducted a routine inspection in mid- February. Knoche, on vacation at the time, learned that while his four tanks passed in “good operating” condition, one failed in cathodic protection. That system, Knoche explains, creates static electricity around a tank and prevents corrosion. Knoche said he’d have to “dig down around the tanks and almost literally pull them out.”
