Users gain an holistic view of all components in the IT infrastructure, and best practice fault management methodologies are incorporated. The solution monitors a wide variety of system environments and operational platforms, and can accommodate information from related tools from CA and third parties, all of which CA Unicenter NSM can incorporate within its role-based, customisable reports on both real-time and historical performance data. While Butler Group is impressed with the overall product offering, it feels CA Unicenter NSM needs to be integrated with a large number of optional components in order to bring about the most comprehensive monitoring and management of all IT infrastructure elements. KEY FINDINGS Single user interface for management of all infrastructure components at all levels. Performance reporting module generates role-based real-time and historical reports. Service Availability Management packs integrate alerts generated by monitoring tools from CA and other vendors. Adaptive configuration capabilities assess which system resources are crucial to monitor on a particular server. Adaptive baselining improves information value. Although direct blade server management is planned, custom integration is required currently. LOOK AHEAD The next release, CA Unicenter NSM r11.2, will provide enhanced integration with additional third-party and CA tools, incorporate enhanced event processing techniques, and provide IPv6 and FIPS 140-2 specification compliance.

TECHNOLOGY AUDIT FUNCTIONALITY Greater dependence on IT to support critical business processes; more demanding service level objectives; and the need to minimise the cost of downtime, all make it imperative for organisations to continuously enhance the availability and performance of the IT elements that underpin business. IT cannot be seen as a business enabler if problems arise frequently in the underlying elements of the IT infrastructure, but if the IT infrastructure’s functional components are managed separately, the result is the delivery of volumes of non- normalised and non-correlated data to the data center manager for analysis. This approach fails to reduce the difficulty of the task of determining the root cause of an issue, due to the need to filter out irrelevant information to correlate the few meaningful events that have led to the issue.
