UNIVERSITY OF LA VERNE Liberal Studies Program Course Syllabus EDUC 330 Instructional Approaches to Physical Education Instructor: Darren K. Avrit, MS. Purpose of Class: This class is designed to provide students with (1) introductory knowledge in the disciplines pertinent, and (2) content appropriate to teaching physical education to elementary (K-6) children II. Objectives of Class: Students who successfully complete this class will be able to: a. Discuss and apply the basic principles of the California State Content Standards in relation to what the students need to know and be able to do for each overarching standard. b. Discuss the basic principles of the California State Content Standards in relation to Movement Skill and Movement Knowledge, Fitness movement and knowledge, and Self Image, Personal Development, and Social Development. c. Discuss and apply the basic principles of motor development, motor learning, biomechanics, exercise physiology, and fitness to age appropriate activities. d. Design a philosophy of physical education for young children based on California State Content Standards to serve as a guide for future physical education instruction. e. Identify and apply the developmental changes and characteristics of children aged 5-12 in all learning domains as it applies to the physical education setting. f. Identify and apply skills and concepts associated with teaching elementary physical education. g. Design and apply a variety of physical activities to K-6 th grade students to meet the California State Content Standards for physical education. h. Demonstrate effective teacher behaviors in planning, implementing, and evaluating teaching episodes by teaching a physical education lesson. III. Required Text a.
