Health 1: Fitness, Sports and Martial Arts Teacher Day Time Branch TA Class Resources needed: Pictures of famous athletes Pictures of people working out Aim: Students will start talking about fitness—specifically sports/activities they enjoy doing in their free time. Stage: Warm-up Page: Time: 5 mins Method: Start by speaking about some activity that you have been doing recently. You could also speak about activities that people in your home country enjoy doing. Ask what your students do in their free time to keep fit. Take a poll by show of hands to see which activities are most popular Comments Aim: Students will define fitness and the characteristics of fitness. Stage: Practice Page: Time: 10 mins Method: Elicit the definition of ‘fitness’. Elicit characteristics of ‘fitness’, or even just words they associate with them. (For example: exercise, sports, gym, healthy). Write these words on the board. Ask students to tell you what it takes to be fit. Have students (in small groups) list activities that A) Keep them healthy and B) Make them unhealthy. Divide students into groups. Go around the groups observing. If appropriate/timely, ask quiet students for their opinions. After a few minutes has elapsed do group feedback Comments Aim: Students will talk about motivations for wanting to be fit (or not want to be fit). Stage: Practice
