EXPERIMENTING WITH MONARCHY: LOUIS XIV of FRANCE I. Absolutism in Theory and Practice II. Louis XIV III. At the Court of the Sun King I. Absolutism in Theory and Practice Absolutism restates the feudal relationships that we started this course with. Focuses on the relationships and interactions with nobles, the people, the church, etc. Absolutist monarch can rule unchecked by any other legal body (no real system of checks and balances). o However, the French know that a good king WILL consult other legal authorities to be considered a good monarch. o So in France, there are certain cultural limits that the King traditionally does not trespass on (local town governments, going on killing sprees, meddling in market capitalism, etc). Three Goals of an Absolutist o “domesticate the nobility” Controlling the nobility. Otherwise the nobility will try to overthrow the monarch. Versailles: built to domesticate the nobles. o Control government o Exercise authority over religion Louis XIII (reign: 1610-1643) Cardinal Richelieu (1585-1642) o These two people are the architects of the new government. o Richelieu’s goals: Controlling the nobility to ensure they know their place. o Richelieu’s destruction campaign: destroys all the nation’s forts and castles (except the ones on France’s borders for protection). What this does is essentially removes the nobility’s ability to launch any kind of campaign against the monarchy and have a base of operations. - Louis XIII a nd Richelieu die at around the sa m e time, leaving a young Louis XIV to inherit th throne. II. Louis XIV (reign: 1643-1715) Anne of Austria o His mother, Father: Louis XII o Considered a “miracle child” because his parents tried for 23 years to have children. o Born in 1638. o
