THE CHANGING BALANCE of POWER: ENGLAND AND SPAIN I. Philip II of Spain (reign: 1556-1598) II. Elizabeth I of England (reign: 1558-1603) III. The Showdown In this lecture, Spain begins to decline after the death of Philip II, partly because the Spanish lose in the naval battle of the Spanish Armada. I. Philip II of Spain Father: Charles V, King of Spain and Holy Roman Empire Groomed at a very young age to be a king. Charles V gave his son many opportunities and experiences to rule over the affairs of Spain. o Because the Spanish and HRE territories are so vast, Charles V has to travel a lot. This allows Philip II opportunities to rule Spain. o But the stress of controlling and traveling so many lands is too much, and so… 1555, Charles V abdicates o Charles V fears that all the Spanish holdings will not be able to be held together by Philip (especially due to the interests of his brother, Ferdinand). So Charles V decides to split the territories. o Philip II gets Spain, Netherlands, the Americas o Ferdinand gets Holy Roman Empire Nonetheless, though his father wanted to make things simpler by dividing territories, Philip maintains an interest to expand his empire/territory. Beliefs: Deeply Catholic, and deeply concerned about the spread of Protestantism. o This means the Spanish Inquisition is strong under Philip. o Strong supporter of the Jesuits. o This scares the Protestant proponents in Europe, especially since Spain’s territories are so vast. 1556 – Marries Mary I of England o Daughter of Catherine of Aragon and Henry VIII (only surviving daughter). o Mary is Catholic, under the pressure of her uncle Charles V. o While in England, Philip does not relate well with the English people. (He reminds them that they are not that important in European politics). o
