2 Structure from the Human Perspective • Perceptions lead to decisions or to policies which lead to decisions • Delivery had greater impact on orders than demand • Plow ahead, even being in total absence of information • Vicious cycles • A shift in mental models and a specific strategy leads to possible success Leverage • Leverage is a potential frequently not exercised • Fail to recognize the system • In order for me to succeed, others must succeed Take two aspirin and wait Rule Don’t Panic Rule What is a System? • A set of interrelated entities, working together as a single whole unit • Has common characteristics – All parts must be present – Parts are arranged in a specific way – A system has a purpose within the larger system – Maintains stability through fluctuations and adjustments – Feedback is the catalyst for changing behaviors Systems Thinking Basics
