What is there to say about the outcome of their recent elections?? o August 30 th and September 27 Similarities: pace at which they developed o France and Great Britain are early developers and Japan and Germany are middle developers o Both created after 1945 history dominated by War o Germans ravaged Europe and Japan had most of Asia (colonizing China and control Korea o Have diminished military Not much power Cant go to war and cant fight outside boundaries

Japan has troops in Iraq but only medical and constructional Germany has troops in Afghanistan and last year sent troops to Lebanon – Israeli border Not very good relationships with their neighbors France, Laos, China etc. Not strong because of US o US has military presence in both countries o US virtually wrote both constitutions still maintain attributes Japanese have emperor (with not many power) Germany has Chancellor with state mostly independent from federal government didn’t force American way on them o Allowed Japan and Germany to have parliamentary democracy parliamentary systems (power is in legislature and party in majority form a government o lower house is Germany – Buadestag and Japan - Bundestrat o upper house in Germany – Diet and in Japan- Senate o The government of these countries are formed by the political party which has the majority of seats in the parliament o without US, Germany and Japan wouldn’t be the countries that they are today They developed very strong economic systems after the war o Japan-ashes to affluence o Germany-Wirtshaftwunder-economic miracle o The economies of these two countries have achieved significant growth for most of the 50’s-80’s

o For some reason, these two economies suffered some kind of decline since the 90’s Not members of the UN security council, even though 2 nd and 3 rd largest contributors to the UN budget Election 2009 o Japan got rid of the LDP o Germany ended the “Grand Coalition” Since 2005, there was serious trouble with government comprised of two major political parties Mention that there are differences Both have ceremonial leaders o Chancellor and Emperor o Not elected by people Differences: Party structure o Up until now, Japan was one-party dominant LDP (liberal democratic party)
