Opposition to the War Spring 1861 Both the North and the South people expressed great support for the war Public dedication declined in bot as the war continued Domestic conflicts within the North and South had only been temporarily overlooked and now came back to the surface o Peace and Surrender Advocates o Internal opposition hurt Confederates more than the Feds o Democrats against Republicans o Unionists trying to end war in South o North had Democratic party advocated anti-war stance Eastern Democrats had the greater strength in immigrants Dislike Income tax, tariffs, building up of war machine by government Generals issued edict saying that the government and the army wouldn’t tolerate treason Denounced many of Lincoln’s edicts 1863 Valandi something May 5, 1863-V arrested, defied Burnsides order to get public notice and sympathy o Found guilty, sentenced to prison during the war o Lincoln didn’t want to make him a martyr so he sent him south o Behind enemy lines o Eventually made his way to Canada and ran for Governor of Ohio from there in 1863 Draft is inciting more and more resistence, especially from Irish immigrants
