Jan-Kristine Bayabo Determination of the Molarity of a Strong Acid Experiment Chem 1A Section 450 September 24, 2008 Title: Titration of TRIS Enables Calculations for Concentrations of a Solution of Hydrochloric Acid Purpose: The purpose of this experiment is to figure out the concentration of an acid solution through analytical techniques and the use of stoichiometry. Methods : 5 mL of hydrochloric acid was diluted in a volumetric flask and was poured in a buret. The 25 mL buret was used to contain the hydrochloric acid for titration. TRIS was diluted in a 250mL Erlenmeyer flask. An average of .2296g of TRIS was diluted in the flask. 4 drops of bromocresol green indicator was added to the TRIS solution initially displaying a blue color. Using the buret device, an average of 19.63 mL of HCl solution was slowly added to the TRIS until the TRIS turned a green color. The green color tells that the acidic solution of HCl is in equilibrium with the basic solution of TRIS. Using the collected data the molarity, or concentration, of HCl was calculated.
