Questions 1. The coating is soluble in water and some organic solvent. The solubility of naproxen is 1g/25mL in 95%ethanol. 2. Yes. As the UV active spots and iodine stain indicates, the product does have unsaturated structure. In addition to the presence of conjugated system, the Rf value in solvent ethyl acetate indicates enough polar portion of the oxygen and non-polar portion of aromatic ring. TLC proves that the product is pure. 3. Aspirin 4. Caffeine is an organic compound with a high degree of polarity and it is quite soluble in both hot water and chloroform. The high solubility in hot water (0.67g/ml) allows caffeine to be extracted from the tea leaves. 5. CH 3 COOH ( aq ) H + ( aq ) + CH 3 COO ( aq ) In acetic acid, hydrogen ions and acetate ions recombine to form acetic acid molecules. The double arrow signifies that at any given instant, less than 5 percent of acetic acid molecules dissociate into hydrogen ions and acetate ions, while the hydrogen ions and acetate ions recombine to form acetic acid molecules.
