    PUBERTY The period during which an individual becomes capable of sexual reproduction - takes place in early adolescence and usually ends long before an individual exits adolescence 5 chief manifestations 1. rapid acceleration in growth 2. development of sex glands 3. development of secondary sex characteristics 4. changes in body composition 5. changes in circulatory and respiratory system

    THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM  Produces, circulates and regulates levels of hormones in the body Receives instructions to increase or decrease circulating levels of hormones from CNS, mainly brain Feedback loop: develops during infancy involving: HYPOTHALAMUS - part of the brain - monitors eating, drinking, sex PITUITARY GLAND - controls growth, regulates other glands – produces gonodotrophic hormones: LH luteinizing hormone & FSH follicle-stimulating hormone GONADS - sex glands - testes & ovaries, release sex hormones
