LECTURE 4 We have about 100 billion to 1 trillion neurons and about 3-5 times that amount when it comes to neuroglia Many but not all dendrites have dendritic spines that look like lollipops Dendrites afferent receive synaptic inputs that are easily made or broken (temp) LEARNING PARADIGM -a dendritic spine pops out about 30 seconds after it receives an input and can disappear quickly if axons that terminate on the dendrites aren’t active Axons efferent 95% of cells have axons if a cell has no axons then they are in the RETINA and are called ANAQUIN CELLS - Axons can be mylinated or not - Internodes are the myelinated area and the non myelinated area of the myelinated axon is ca node of ranvier o To speed up the potential is to increase the diameter of the axon The axon hillock is where action potentials are generated Vertebrates have mostly multipolar neurons Invertabrates have unipolar neurons where there is only an axon Dorsal root ganglion cells are located in the spinal cord and are true sensory cells of the CNS because it mak contact at the periphery Derivatives of the neural crest (cells left over after the neural tube is formed(CNS)) forms the peripheral NS Golgi Type 1 cells are long distance motor cells to the brain stem and to the lumbar saccryl Golgi Type 2 cells are short myelinated/are inhibitory in function and modulate with info
