Life of Sacco Soapstone Speaker: The voice that tells the story is Bartolomeo Vanzetti, the author, because the essay is in the first person. One can assume that Vanzetti does value sacrifice of ordinary ambitions to the cause of liberty, and is also moved by speaking out for such a sacrifice. It can be deduced that at the time this piece was written, Vanzetti was an anarchic 35-year- old male peasant laborer. Occasion: Vanzetti and Sacco were anarchists, arrested for murder. While in prison awaiting execution, Vanzetti wrote this piece. It is a memory of his life and that of Sacco. It recalls the entire life as well as beliefs of these two anarchists, taking place in the late 19 th to early 20 th century United States. Audience: Although Vanzetti does not directly state who his intended audience is, the Intended audience appears to be anarchists and the politically neutral.
