Willy Goebel Per. 5 10/12/09 Young Goodman Brown Objects generally viewed as good are destroyed by objects of evil in Nathanial Hawthorne’s “Young Goodman Brown”, symbolizing the evil nature of the universe. When Faith’s ribbons are displaced by the black mass of clouds, the author demonstrates how the force f evil can remove the pure qualities of a person. Also, when the trees are lit on fire as part of the Satan worshippers’ congregation, it is shown how evil destroys the planet. Overall, good loses the battle against evil through symbols. Faith, herself obviously a symbol of the Faith of young Goodman Brown, is captured by the black mass of cloud created by the Satan worshippers. The ribbons that were in her hair then fall from the sky to the feet of young Goodman Brown, which signifies the kidnapping to him. The black mass of cloud, surely symbolizing the evil soul of man, strips Faith of her purity and innocence. The evil nature of the human race is thereby ruining the qualities of people that are actually desirable. This event is used to
