Lect 17 Body Weight Study Questions 1. What is the difference between positive and negative energy balance? a. Positive energy balance is when you eat more energy than you use (so you basically gain weight) b. Negative energy balance is when you eat less energy than you lose (so you basically lose weight) 2. Describe the 3 major routes of energy output. Describe how each of these outputs is affected by gender. a. One major route of energy output is basal metabolism. Women: muscle mass proportionally smaller b. Another major route is physical activity, which consists of running, walking, and sleeping. c. Last major route is adaptive thermogenesis, which is when you get excess heat from overeating, shivering (heat production), and adaption to trauma/stress. Due to this, basal metabolism decreases because heat decreases 3. What are some problems with using BMI as a measure of a person’s fatness?
