Of all the industries in the entire world the petroleum industry is about as big as it gets. There are many processes necessary to get gas “fuel for your car”. We begin by locating oil reservoirs through the use of seismology. Once a reservoir is located the well is drilled into this reservoir. After the well is drilled the well must be completed. Upon completion the well is now called a producing oil or natural gas well. The crude oil that is extracted from the earth now needs to refined. An oil refinery is an industrial processing plant where crude oil is processed and refined into more useful petroleum products. Most products of oil processing are usually grouped into three categories: light distillates gasoline, middle distillates diesel, and heavy distillates lubricating oil. Louisiana currently has 17 operating refinerys. That account for 16% of the nations refining. The last major U.S. refinery built was Marathon's Garyville, La., facility in

Marathon oil and gas is currently expanding there production at there Garyville location. This expansion will cost 2.2billion dollars. This expansion will increase there production by 15%. The refinery is currently producing 245,000 barrels per day after the expansion they will be producing 425,000 barrels per day. Environmental issues are another reason new refinerys are not being built. The refining process releases numerous different chemicals into the atmosphere; consequently, there are substantial air pollution emissions and a notable odor normally accompanies the presence of a refinery. Aside from air pollution impacts there are also wastewater concerns, risks of industrial accidents such as fire and explosion, and noise health effects due to industrial noise....
