Unformatted text preview: 1976. For several reasons new refinery has not been built in over 30 years. Cost is one of the main reasons a new refinery has not been built. Marathon oil and gas is currently expanding there production at there Garyville location. This expansion will cost 2.2billion dollars. This expansion will increase there production by 15%. The refinery is currently producing 245,000 barrels per day after the expansion they will be producing 425,000 barrels per day. Environmental issues are another reason new refinerys are not being built. The refining process releases numerous different chemicals into the atmosphere; consequently, there are substantial air pollution emissions and a notable odor normally accompanies the presence of a refinery. Aside from air pollution impacts there are also wastewater concerns, risks of industrial accidents such as fire and explosion, and noise health effects due to industrial noise....
