The biggest problem you are likely to have in senior design (and in your career) is figuring out how to work together effectively as a group It is very often frustrating and difficult, but the problems are (often) easy to avoid, or solve I can help you deal with these problems What’s in it for you? What’s in it for you? I am available for consultation by individuals or teams on ‘team dynamic’ problems I have nothing to do with the grade you receive What you tell me is between you and me How do you help me How do you help me help you? Help me identify team problems by: – Filling in the ‘ISyE Team Satisfaction Survey’ – Contacting me as soon as team problems arise How do you get in touch How do you get in touch with me? How many of you get mad at the ‘slacker’ who doesn’t pull her/his weight? How many of you have been really honked off with the obnoxious team member who wants to tell everybody what to do? How many of you wish some of the team members would listen to your good ideas and use them? How many of you wish the blabber mouths with the crazy ideas on your team would just shut up and get to work? Teamwork problems that have Teamwork problems that have happened in Sr Design One or two of your team members are not perceived to pull their weight Communications between team members breaks down Communications with your client or your advisor is be difficult Your project schedule will blow up You have no effective team leader What I expect to be happening What I expect to be happening now in your team You don’t get along all that well There is disagreement or little agreement on team aims Individual roles and responsibilities are unclear You don’t have a decision process that works well What happens in a well What happens in a well functioning team Commitment and unity is strong The team knows what it is doing and why Roles and responsibilities are clear and accepted Big decisions are made by group agreement Disagreements are resolved positively Leadership is shared by team members There is a focus on over­achieving How do we get there? How do we get there? Build an effective team Develop an effective communications strategy Accept responsibility and report regularly Establish a schedule and monitor your progress Learn to disagree without being disagreeable The Team – The Team – learn about each other Socialize to build friendship Develop trust and respect Do a ‘skills inventory’ for each member Complete the Myers­Briggs personality profile and use it to have more productive meetings The Team – The Team – be honest with each other What does each team member consider a personal win? Get to know what other demands are on everyone’s time – A top notch performance that’s worth an A+++ – A pretty decent job that keeps my GPA up – No worse than a C – As long as I don’t fail Develop an effective Develop an effective communications strategy Establish a web site for the team (T square?) Maximum 48 hours response to e­mail, 24 hours response to voice mail Have a set time for team to meet as a whole Each team member must notify the team when they are unavailable any time during the project Accept responsibility and Accept responsibility and report regularly What role does each team member want to play? Accept responsibility for that role Every member regularly ‘shows, not tells’ their progress to the rest of the team Share all information and report problems immediately Meetings are Mandatory but keep them short. Have a written agenda, record assignments and follow up Establish a schedule and Establish a schedule and monitor your progress Realistically establish how much time will be needed outside class to finish the project ­ “12 productive hours per week” Establish a timeline and progress bar Your workload will not be even over the semester – get everyone’s schedule of obligations and plan for it now Schedule regular reality checks Learn to disagree without Learn to disagree without being disagreeable. You have a responsibility to constructively criticize other’s work and to accept constructive criticism “Fix the problem – not the blame” Be honest. No ‘hidden agendas’. Put everything on the table and air divergent views Seek consensus so that the team wins and nobody loses Conflict Resolution Conflict Resolution The only conduct you control is your own Have YOU ever been persuaded by being insulted, contradicted or shouted down? Listen!!!
