Answers to Homework Assignment for October 23, 2008 - ECON 423/823 1. Figure 9-4 illustrates this typical pattern of the demographic transition . First, the death rate begins to decline, which causes the rate of population growth to rise. Then the birth rate also begins to decline, but the death rate declines further, and population growth continues. Later, the birth rate begins to fall as fast as the death rate, and population growth peaks. Eventually, the more-rapidly falling birth rate approaches the death rate, and population growth slows down. In a number of European countries, population growth has ceased altogether. While the pattern of the demographic transition is similar across countries, the timing and the exact rates of population growth generated differ quite a bit across countries. Comparing the various tables and figures in the chapter, for example, the demographic transition in France was longer, but it generated much less population growth than the transition in Sweden. And, Mexico’s transformation has been shorter, although it is not yet complete. Many developing countries are still in the middle of demographic transitions. The demographic transition is closely related to economic growth. Life expectancy increased rapidly beginning in the 1800s, due in large part to the systematic reduction in infant mortality as well as the reduction of frequency of death across all ages due to disease, plague, and famine. The greater certainty of reaching an advanced age raised the returns to investment
