Unformatted text preview: Name: Discussion Section: WWW 2:128 §undamental Genetics Exam 1 September 25, 2008 Write or diagram your answers in the space provided. For genetics problems, show ali your work. You may get partiaE credit for an incorrect answer if you do. The approximate amount of time to spend on each question is provided in the brackets. The exam is worth 90 pts. 1. [16 min] Hobbits are an ancient race of humanlike individuals characterized by small stature, curly brown hair (on head), and hairy feet. Like humans, females have two X chromosomes and mates are XY. Occasionally, hobbtts with bioncle hair or hairless feet are born. These are separate recessive traits and they assort independently. Suppose that a female hobbit with brown hair and hairless feet marries a male hobbit with blonde hair and hairy feet. They have 10 children of the following sexes and phenotypes. Males: 3 hairless feet, blonde hair Females: 2 hairy feet, blonde hair 3 hairless feet, brown hair 2 hairy feet, brown hair A. Using appropriate ailele designations, give the genotypes of the two parents. B. Give the genotypes for each of the four different offspring types. Specify which genotype gives each phenotype. Pt 4‘ why ’v/ is 3: C. List the possible genotypes of the children ofa couple in which the male has brown hair and hairless feet and the female has blonde hair and hairy feet. As part of your answer, consider all possible eno es for this cou le. D. What genotypes would the [gaggleg be if they were found to have both male and female children with both recessive traits (blonde and hairless feet)? 2. [12 mire] The drawing below depicts a 61 phase cell from a simple organism with 2 pairs of homologous chromosomes (2n =4). 5%» t a A. Draw this cell as it would appear in metaphase of mitosis. Next to your drawing, state how many chromosomes and how many chromatids are in the cell. B. Drawthis cell as it would appear in metaphase of meiosis i. Next to your drawing, state how many chromosomes and how many chromatids are in the cell. C. Draw one of the danghter cells of this cell as it would appear in metaphase of meiosis ll. Next to your drawing, state how many chromosomes and how many chromatids are in the daughter cell. D. Suppose that instead of the cell having oniy 2 pairs of homologous chromosomes, it has 4 pairs. How many different gamete types are possible from such a cell (not accounting for the possibility of crossover events)? of that number, how many wouid be expected to have either all biack (paternal) chromosomes or all gray (maternai) chromosomes? {22 min} The following data are from a threefactor cross in Drosophila involving three linked genes on the third chromosome: approximated (app, abnormai wings), javefin (jv, abnormal bristles), sepia (se, dark brown eye color). Triply heterozygous F1 females were mated to tester app jv se/appjv 59 males. The F2 progeny were collected and scared for their phenotypes. F2 Phenogge Observed at: A. Draw a simpie map (ozr maps) to show the relationship between the two genes and their centromerefi). include map distances where possibie. NOTE: map distances calculated by different methods may not be strictly additive. Ng’ ‘1 I saw 1 f [12 min.] Females with the karyotype 45;XO occur with a frequency of approximately 4 in 10,000. 7.
