Intro to Fiction 02.02.09 1. Why does Dracula come to England? a. P. 51: longs to be in midst of whirl of humanity.  b. Could be something political: him wanting to go to center of empirical England.  c. Level of story: he wants to go where there are most people. d. In Nosfaratu  i. Dracula wants to go due to sexual desire for Lucy (wife of Harkin). e. Copolla version i. Sexual motivation is expanded into full blown plot. ii. Mina is reincarnation of Dracula’s wife.  iii. Significant reinterpretation that idea he comes to London is for Mina specifically.  f. Is it true in some sense in the novel that Dracula comes to England specifically for the women? i. Clearly some relationship between sex and vampirism. ii. P. 69 biting someone and having sex with them seems to have same desire 1. He’s repulsed and thrilled 2. Extremely ambivalent.  iii. P. 91 excessive sexual desire?? 1. One justification for it is the scene we saw earlier with similar structure (3 suitors). That  scene activates the meaning in Lucy’s scene. a. Conjures up fantasies.  b. Symbolic proof that when Lucy wants to marry all three, it’s a sign of sexual  desire. 2.
