Student Name Engineering 367 TR 2:30pm Major Paper 2 Formal Proposal 14 November 2006 Wiretapping and Its Abuses Since September 11, 2001 Thesis The U.S. government's uses of wiretapping since September 11, 2001 have resulted in the loss of rights that should be guaranteed by a democracy. Abstract With the enactment of the Patriot Act and other legislation the government has been granted unprecedented power to invade people’s privacy. The most controversial provision of legislation allows for the wiretapping of anyone in the United States without a judicial warrant as long as it’s done to prevent terrorism. These measures violate the U.S. Constitution as well as other acts of legislation. The new legislation also allows for the search and seizure of property of a person without being informed of it until afterwards. With all the newly granted powers of the federal government that have been documented abuses including Telecommunication Company records seizures and searches of homes without warrants or follow-up notification of items removed.
