We have claimed that language change is a consequence of language/dialect contact and language acquisition by children (irregular language performance that is acquired as a regular language competence). Compare this to the standard view of language change in comparative philology (some constant linguistic drift in speech communities no longer in communicative contact) or classical philology (language change mirrors changes in the surrounding socio-political context typically on a word by word basis).
