Unformatted text preview: Hemorrhagic gastroenteritis Acute onset bloody vomiting/ diarrhea with potentially high mortality Etiology unknown More common in some of the small breeds (toy poodles, miniature Dachsies and Schnauzers, etc.) Presentation: Acute onset vomiting, bloody diarrhea Depression, dehydration hypovolemic shock Diagnosis: Major feature is marked elevation of PCV (can be >60%) Rule outs: CPV enteritis (SNAP test), vaccination history Other infectious diseases—coronavirus, Salmonella Parasites—whips, hooks, coccidia Coalgulopathies, rodenticide ingestion Addison’s disease Hypersensitivity reaction Treatment: Supportive therapy Fluids, spiked with potassium Antibiotics (typically ampicillin/gentamicin) NPO 2-3 days, then bland diet Comments: May have a hypersensitivity component Most treated dogs recover uneventfully, may have recurrences Acute Diarrhea Abrupt onset, short duration Can be divided into Self-limiting, non-fatal Related to another systemic disorder Severe, life-threatening Simple, uncomplicated Otherwise normal animal Dietary change, drugs, stress often the cause Check to rule out parasites...
