“McDonaldization” of Society The McDonaldization of society means that elements that can be seen in the fast food industry are now being seen in other industries as well. Many other industries are beginning to become more efficient to make things easier on the consumers. The emphasis on calculability is now a tool used by many businesses to emphasis quantity rather than quality. Predictability is now used so consumers know what to expect and are not taken back by change. Industries control curtain aspects of their business so the consumer has an easier experience. For example, now, grocery stores have self-checkout lanes where consumers are allowed to scan their groceries before leaving the store. Previously, people had to be checked out of the store by chasers, but now places like Wal-Mart and Kroger allow people to do it by them selves. Also, like McDonald’s expansion throughout the United States to places where there is now very many corporation has taking place. Stores
