Volatile Memory- Requires the computer system to be on. Temporary memory. RAM Non-volatile Memory- Stores information even when the computer is not on. Flash drives, hard drive, floppy discs. Even tho this information is stored permanently, it is expensive to access non-volatile memory. Programs pull and work with information in caches and ram to be quick and efficient but lose that information once the program is done. So all the data we have used to so far is lost to us when we close our fortran program. Well you probably want to save that data

File Processing A File is a “resource” which stores data (non-volatile) for use by a program. File Input : Transferring data from an existing file into the program. File Output : Saving program output to a new or existing file

A computer file is a block of arbitrary information, or resource for storing information, which is available to a computer program and is usually based on some kind of durable storage . A file is durable in the sense that it remains available for programs to use after the current program has finished. Computer files can be considered as the modern counterpart of paper documents which traditionally are kept in offices' and libraries' files , and this is the source of the term.
